Margherita pizza is a simple yet flavorful classic that showcases fresh ingredients and a thin, crispy crust. To achieve an authentic taste, the cooking method plays a crucial role.
First, prepare your pizza dough. You can either make it from scratch using flour, yeast, water, and olive oil, or purchase pre-made dough. Roll it out thinly, forming a round pizza base.
For the sauce, use freshly crushed tomatoes, garlic, and a pinch of salt. Spread a thin layer of the sauce over the dough.
Top the pizza with fresh mozzarella cheese. Be sure to tear it into small pieces and distribute it evenly, avoiding overloading. Next, scatter fresh basil leaves and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil.
There are two main cooking methods: oven-baked and wood-fired. If you're using a conventional oven, preheat it to 500°F (260°C) and bake the pizza on a pizza stone or baking sheet for 8-12 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
For wood-fired ovens, the pizza cooks at a higher temperature (around 900°F or 480°C) and is done in just 90 seconds. This method gives the pizza a smoky flavor and perfectly blistered crust.
